The Dragon & The Maiden

Writer's picture: Jonathan D DysonJonathan D Dyson

Sweet maiden of the golden hair

Her dresses fine her features fair

Prisoner deep in dragon's lair

Adventurers and knights beware

Upon the doorstep of the beast

You're treated to a gruesome feast

The main course, you will like the least

Tis you alone, no spice, no yeast

But if you happen to slip by

While serpent is away in sky

Then hurry, but keep wary eye

For at his return, you will die

Then sneak quickly through tunnels deep

To find the woman fast asleep

Her shackles bolted, chained to feet

And those before, 'round her in heap

Blood staining hands and hair and slip

Understanding your mind takes grip

The dragon is no clear culprit

Instead sentry of a dire crypt

But then to ear disturbing sound

A hulking mass of scales on ground

You listen close, then turning 'round

Before you stands the girl who's bound

Your fates between them, you must choose

For would you life or soul to lose?

As too late to make pride a bruise

You've fallen hard for simple ruse

For had you thought with keener mind

Wisdom in damsel tale you'd find

Maybe villagers were not blind

Ignoring monsters of two kind
